What is WHMIS?
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is a comprehensive system designed to ensure the safe handling, use, and storage of hazardous materials in Canadian workplaces. It provides essential health and safety information through standardized labeling, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and worker education.
Alignment with GHS
WHMIS has been harmonized with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), a worldwide standard. This alignment introduces standardized language and formats for labels and SDSs, making it easier for workers across the globe to understand and respond to workplace hazards.
Employers’ Duties under WHMIS
To ensure a safe workplace, employers must:
- Educate and train workers on hazards and safe product use.
- Ensure products are properly labeled with WHMIS symbols.
- Prepare workplace labels and safety data sheets when necessary.
- Provide 24/7 access to up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
- Implement control measures to protect workers during material handling.
