WHMIS Certification & Safety

What is WHMIS?

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is a comprehensive system designed to ensure the safe handling, use, and storage of hazardous materials in Canadian workplaces. It provides essential health and safety information through standardized labeling, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and worker education.

Key Components of WHMIS

Hazard Classification

Categorizing materials based on chemical/physical properties and potential health risks.

Labeling Requirements

Standardized symbols, signal words, and hazard statements to alert workers to risks.

Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)

Detailed documents covering safe handling, first aid, and regulatory compliance.

Education & Training

Mandatory training for workers to interpret labels and handle materials safely.

Alignment with GHS

WHMIS has been harmonized with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), a worldwide standard. This alignment introduces standardized language and formats for labels and SDSs, making it easier for workers across the globe to understand and respond to workplace hazards.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Supplier: Sells or imports hazardous products into Canada.
  • Manufacturer: Produces, processes, or packages hazardous products.
  • Importer: Brings hazardous products into Canada without selling them.
  • Distributor: Resells hazardous products without modifying them.

Employers’ Duties under WHMIS

To ensure a safe workplace, employers must:

  • Educate and train workers on hazards and safe product use.
  • Ensure products are properly labeled with WHMIS symbols.
  • Prepare workplace labels and safety data sheets when necessary.
  • Provide 24/7 access to up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
  • Implement control measures to protect workers during material handling.
