AODA & Health and Safety Certification

What Are The AODA Training Requirements?

Training content must cover workplace-specific responsibilities in any of the following accessibility standards:

  • Employment Standards
  • Information and Communications
  • Transportation Services
  • Design of Public Spaces
  • Customer Service Standards
  • The Ontario Human Rights Code (accessibility and disability)
  • Accessibility Policy

Why do we Need AODA Training?

AODA training gives employees the basic knowledge about accessibility and how it influences people with disabilities. We often think of disabilities as either physical or visible; however, AODA includes all disabilities: physical, visible, and non-visible, such as learning and mental health disabilities.

Pro-Tip: When interacting with an individual with vision impairment, always identify yourself. Speak directly to them, not their service animal. If you need to leave, let them know.

Who Needs AODA Training?

Training is mandatory if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Are a paid worker (Existing or New)
  • Provide goods, services, or facilities for your organization
  • Develop organization policies (e.g., Board Members)
  • Existing workers starting a new position

Ontario Health and Safety Certification

The Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training regulation requires awareness training for every worker under the OHSA. Every worker must:

  • Follow the law and workplace health and safety procedures.
  • Always wear or use protective equipment required by the employer.
  • Act in a way that won’t hurt themselves or others.
  • Report any hazards found in the workplace to a supervisor.
